Autistic Adults at Bittersweet Farms $109.46 Autistic Adults at Bittersweet Farms is a touching view of an inspirational residential care program for autistic adolescents and adults. This compelling book focuses on adult autism treated through the concepts used at Bittersweet Farms, an 80-acre farm in northwest Ohio. Through historical rationale for a therapeutic community, a comparison between the Bittersweet Farms model and treatment settings in the United Kingdom, specific treatments and training programs at Bittersweet Farms, and staff, parent, and resident viewpoints, the innovative program–based on the premise that adults with autism continue to need special care and training throughout their lives–is brought to life. /br/brDivided into three sections, Autistic Adults at Bittersweet Farms returns repeatedly to the concept behind the program–molding autistic adults into contributing members of society in their own ways. Section One includes a potpourri of information, giving a glimpse of the range of models available for treatment and what makes each program a success. Taking a closer look at program considerations within various community settings, the second section examines behavior modification techniques in training autistic children and educating their parents. As politics play an important role in developing an innovative care program like Bittersweet Farms, the final section delves into regulations and funding for different types of residential care programs. Ending on a very human and optimistic note, section three closes with three personal accounts of life and work at Bittersweet Farms from a staff member, a resident, and a parent, with each praising a different aspect of the total person care environment of Bittersweet Farms. Occupational and physical therapists, policymakers, educators, and parents of autistic children will be encouraged from reading this outstanding book. |

General View of the Agriculture of Berkshire $39.17 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: CHAP. -It STATE OF PROPERTY. Section i.?Estates And Their Management. If tli’- general division of property is a source of in dividual energy and national happiness; if that county is ever found to make the greatest improvements in agriculture, where estates are neither too small to be Occupied with advantage, nor so large as to occasion a, numerous rack-rent tenantry, in these respects Berkshire has claims to pre-eminence, which few of the neighbouring provinces will dispute. On a moderate calculation, the landed property, including houses, mills, and other productive ferenue, arising from, or attached to the soil, cannot amount to less than 500,000/. per annum. Of this sum, the largest possessor in the county may probably have about 8000/. a year; a few more may have estates to the value of 5j 6t or 7000 /.; but great land owners are rare, cither among peers or commoners: of the former Earl Craven has the largest possessions; of the latter E L. Loveden, Esq. In the lower part of the county, indeed, property is least divided, though every where we find a respectable number of yeomanry; In the upper part, we see several handsome seats with land notexceeding 100 acres.: j In In the parish of Winkfield, consisting of nearly 10,000 acres, the largest estate is under 400 acres; nor is Iliis moderate distribution unusual in many other parishes of Berkshire. Hence, a high spirited and in dependent yeomanry, actively engaged in agricultural pursuits, and each forming a circle of connection around him, is the distinguishing character of the county. The gradations of society have here no broken links: from the highest to the lowest, there is a gradually ascending or descending scale. In such a state we may look for patriotism without interest, and a display of generous… |

Town and Countryside in Western Berkshire, c.1327-c.1600: Social and E $96.26 A fresh examination of how society and economy changed at the end of the middle ages, comparing urban and rural experience. The traditional boundary between the medieval and early modern periods is challenged in this new study of social and economic change that bridges the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. It addresses the large historical questions – what changed, when and why – through a detailed case study of western Berkshire and Newbury, integrating the experiences of both town and countryside. Newbury is of particular interest being a rising cloth manufacturing centre that had contacts with London and overseas due to its specialist production of kerseys. The evidence comes from original documentary research and the data are clearly presented in tables and graphs. It is a book alive with the actions of people, famous men such as the clothier John Winchcombe known as ‘Jack of Newbury’, but more notably by the hundreds of individuals, such as William Eyston or Isabella Bullford, who acquired property, cultivated their lands, or, in the case of Isabella, managed the mill complex after her husband’s death. MARGARET YATES is Lecturer in History at the University of Reading. |

Maiwand: The Last Stand of the 66th (Berkshire) Regiment Afghanistan, $46.95 DIVDIVOn 27 July the 66th (Berkshire) Regiment fought a terrible battle on the dusty plains of Afghanistan. The battle went down in history as a massacre which effectively wiped out the regiment. They lost 10 officers and 276 men. Nonetheless, their valiant fighting was an inspiration to many, from Kipling to Conan Doyle, who based Dr. Watson on the 66th medical officer Major Preston. Queen Victoria presented medals to the survivors, and it was Maiwand and the 66th’s battle against the Zulus the year before which resulted in the British Army no longer carrying Colors into battle. This book tells the story of this fine Victorian regiment from 1870 when they went to India through Afghanistan and back to England in 1881, bringing the regiment to life and concentrating on the characters who made it what it was. This title is illustrated with many previously unpublished photographs from the Wardrobe Museum archives./DIV/DIVDIVDIVRichard J. Stackpoole Riding is the chairman of the U.K. Dr. Watson Society and has a life-long interest in the Battle of Maiwand./DIV/DIV |

But when a teen idol classmate sends some mothers into a flashbulb frenzy that causes Hikaru to panic, other parents begin to question his presence alongside “normal” students in the classroom. And when Hikaru’s first school trip also leads to chaos, Sachiko begins to worry that Hikaru may be losing his hard-fought place in society.
